Pigs in a Blanket Fancy Variations –
My mom never added anything else to her Pigs in a Blanket and they were still delicious! If you’re feeling fancy, brush the raw dough with an egg wash or melted butter and add any of the following:
- rosemary
- coarse salt
- shredded cheese – Cheddar cheese, Mozarella, Pepper Jack or American cheese are delicious
- sesame seeds
- poppy seeds
- chopped basil
- Everything Bagel seasoning
- Italian seasoning
- bread crumbs
You can also stuff your sausage with a slice of cheese, pickle, or jalapeño before wrapping the sausage in the dough.
My oldest sonhates hot dogs, so when I make these for my family I’ll skip the sausage in a few of them and wrap the dough around some shredded cheese. He loves them!
How To Make Pigs In A Blanket
INGREDIENTS –
- MEAT – you can use beef or pork hot dogs cut into thirds, or you can use Little Smokies co*cktail sausages
- DOUGH – I like the buttery flakiness of crescent roll dough, but you can use any refrigerated biscuit dough cut in half, or puff pastry cut down small enough to wrap around your hot dogs.
- OPTIONAL SEASONINGS –
- rosemary
- coarse salt
- shredded Cheddar cheese
- sesame seeds
- poppy seeds
- basil
- Everything Bagel seasoning
- Italian seasoning
- bread crumbs
DIRECTIONS –
PREP. Preheat the oven to 375. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
CUT. Unroll the can of the dough and separate it into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle into 3 narrow triangles.
TIP: Refrigerated dough is easier to work with when chilled, so work fast for best results, or make in bathes, chilling the dough until you’re ready to use it.
PAT. Dry your sausages by patting them gently with a napkin or paper towel.
ROLL. Place 1 sausage at the wide end of each triangle androll them towardsthe small point of the triangle. Place thewrapped sausages on your prepared baking sheets with a couple of inches of space between each one so they don’t bump into each other.
BRUSH. You can bake these as-is, or you can brush them with a raw egg or melted butter and sprinkle them with your favorite seasoning.
BAKE. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
SERVE. Remove from the baking sheet and serve warm with ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, honey mustard, or your favorite dipping sauces.
To Make Ahead: Assemble as directed and place Pigs in a Blanket on prepared cookie sheets. Cover raw piggies with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to bake. Remove plastic wrap and bake as directed.
