‘You’ve got cancer’ - three words no one wants to hear. A friend told me today that when his doctor called him this week, those words knocked him on his ass. He’s the 4th person this week who’s reached out with a similar story. But here’s the good news: Cancer is not a death sentence. All four of these people discovered it early which SIGNIFICANTLY improves their chances of survival. And by significantly, I mean up to 80 to 90% in some cases.I’m posting this simply to help raise awareness for the importance of cancer screening and early detection. In Ontario, we have screening programs for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. Other cancers like lung, prostate, skin and testicular can be tested for when signs and symptoms present themselves. The picture below is my kids and I celebrating my last chemo treatment 12 years ago today. I’m still kicking, causing sh*t and living proof that early detection can save lives. Don’t wait or hesitate. Book an appointment today. Get checked.

Congratulations on your continued good health Peter! Sending you good vibes!!! Catching it early is key!!Beautiful family! Provides a great inspiration!!I heard those same words and didn’t believe it until they were prepping me for surgery. Then it became very real. Now, after 7 weeks of radiation and continued drug therapy, finding out it’s metastasized, I’m hoping to celebrate one day in the future as you are today.

Thank for sharing. A great milestone that ‘dozen’ years is.I’ve heard those words too often… worse when they change it up to ‘your cancer is back’… but again trust in my doctors and positivity is the best journey to winning.I’m happy for you and your family. Forward.#f*ckCancer #Warrior

I love hearing success stories and they have come a long way. Congratulations. While I recently lost my father to a super rare lymphoma, being vigilant about getting checked caught and cured his prostate and melanoma cancers easily (I mean he made it look easy) with minimal treatments, no pain and no recurrence.

Peter Shier Awareness is extremely important. My mother has had stomach cancer, melanoma, and most recently colon cancer. No one, nor their friends/family, wants to hear those three words. Thank you for sharing your story and congratulations. Early detection is key.

Peter, I am embarrassed to say I had no idea you went through that. But then you are not the kind of person who would seek attention for their health challenges. Congratulations on your anniversary and may you see many more.

It wasn't grabbing a late night sub at Louie's Hot Truck. Or pitchers of beer at The Chapter House. Or trudging through the Ithaca snow. Or even learning astronomy from Carl Sagan back in the day. The most honoured tradition at Cornell is watching hockey at Lynah Rink. And anyone who asks what my favourite time at CU was? Playing in front of these energized, creative, boisterous fans every weekend. Like nowhere else. The choices we make can transport us to wonderfully unexpected places. So grateful to have been a part of this tradition. Memories for life. https://lnkd.in/gJ26HMxM

I’ve been reading business books from ‘management guru’s’ since devouring Tom Peters classic “In Search of Excellence” many years ago. The pearls of wisdom the guru’s spill become lessons learned and influence how you manage, what to focus on, how you will be seen and remembered and so on. One of the most influential leaders for me was Dee Hock. That’s him in the pic, the apparent love child of Rick Moranis and Fred Armisen. Mr. Hock created the Visa payment system. I found him in the pages of Fast Company magazine and his people focussed business philosophy left a life long impression on me.Here’s an example:”Control is not leadership; management is not leadership; leadership is leadership is leadership. If you seek to lead, invest at least 50% of your time leading yourself-your own purpose, ethics, principles, motivation, conduct. Invest at least 20% leading those with authority over you and 15% leading your peers. If you don't understand that you work for your mislabeled 'subordinates,' then you know nothing of leadership. You know only tyranny.”He wrote this 20-25 years ago and it’s a helpful reminder that people have always been the most important asset a company can have. I wish more companies understood that. If you want more of Dee Hock, there’s a link in the first comment.

How many times have you heard the term ‘sea of sameness’? The world of investment banking actually may not have invented the term but they perfected it. Going against the flow can be intimidating and challenging. It takes guts. Very gratifying to see MPA follow through and carve out a unique and differentiating position in their category. Also great to jam on ideas with people who are open, intelligent and committed to zig when others zag. Congrats David, Brent and the MPA Morrison Park Advisors Inc. team.

I recently asked a Hall of Fame hockey player how he developed his backhand. I swear to gawd, he could not only break your stick with his backhand passes, he could backhand roof it bar-down-top-cheese at a velocity faster than most snapshots. Just scary. He said when he was 15, every day after practice he spent 45 minutes doing nothing but having the puck on his backhand. Every day. Shooting, passing, toe dragging, more shooting and then more. For an entire year. All that time just honing a fundamental. Yes, the backhand is one of the fundamentals of the sport. So is the crossover, the first 3 steps, board work, shielding the puck and a host of other skills. Executing these fundamentals is like building the foundation for a house; do it right and the rest will be a lot easier to build. It’s sometimes drudge work but it’s absolutely essential. Which brings me to Prime. A while ago, I was asked to meet with an entrepreneur who had just purchased a beverage company in Canada to share some marketing knowledge. When I mentioned his company to a colleague he said, 'Are you nuts? Prime will eat his lunch. They're backed by serious influencers and everyone is all over them. It's not cheap either. Your guy is gonna get absolutely dusted'.I quickly googled Prime (and Logan Paul and KSI and dusted) and despite my ignorance, took the call and then listened intently as the entrepreneur rhymed off distribution, awareness building, pricing, sponsorships and a very tight brand proposition. All the fundamentals of branding 101. He certainly didn't need my help. Fast forward a few months and I just saw Prime piled high on the discount rack of my local convenience store, selling at $.99/bottle. Not sure who’s lunch they ate but my entrepreneur guy is alive and well and about as un-dusted as they come. The prime business model (and many others) is based on buying an audience (via Influencers), the influencer becomes the brand and what they shill is the product(s). It’s lazy, misguided, shortsighted and often why these ‘one hit wonders’ don’t succeed. The article here is worth a read for anyone who thinks taking short cuts is the way to go.

Hockey in Salt Lake City??? Where did that come from? How did that happen? Well, here’s a look back to when they had a Central League team called the Eagles. The Eagles won the championship two years in a row in the late 70’s. The guy in front of the net in blue and gold was Doug Palazzari (aka Pizza) - all 5’2” of him - who led the league in scoring that year. Jim Warden is the Oklahoma City Stars goalie and Bill Butters of OKC is making Pizza’s life miserable. That #27 guy is me, relieved I didn’t just pick up a minus and trying to figure out where to go and what to do next. Current Winnipeg Jets coach Rick Bowness and ex-Calgary Flame Joe Mullen were also part of the Eagles. They were tough to beat. It’s a pretty good hockey town. My most vivid memory was the bar we went to after the games - The Dead Goat Saloon.
