How gardeners can find that tricky balance between lawn and not-lawn

  • By JESSICA DAMIANO - Associated Press

When it comes to the American lawn, feelings can run high. Turf grasses cover a lot of real estate across the country, while sucking water and doing next to nothing for biodiversity. But many people aren't about to give up their lawn entirely. So let’s talk about sustainable ways to care for it. First, stop chasing perfection. It doesn’t exist. Consider replacing part of your lawn with flower beds or a groundcover like clover. Then, care for the lawn thoughtfully. Select turf grasses that thrive in your region. For small lawns, use a push mower, and for larger areas, consider a rechargeable electric mower. Water less frequently but deeply to help grass roots go deeper. And you can replace your lawn fertilizer with mulched grass clippings.

Rattled Pakistan wins toss and bowls 1st against Canada in a must-win T20 World Cup group game

  • AP

Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and chose to bowl first in a must-win Group A game against Canada at the Twenty20 World Cup. Pakistan, the 2022 finalist, has been rattled by two defeats against the United States and rival India. It not only needs to win its remaining two games but also hope results of other group games go in its favor to progress to the second stage of the tournament being jointly co-hosted by the U.S. and West Indies. Both teams made one change with Saim Ayub replacing Iftikhar Ahmed for Pakistan and batter Ravinderpal Singh getting his first World Cup appearance in place of Dilpreet Bajwa for Canada.

US Coast Guard says ship with cracked hull likely didn't strike anything in Lake Superior

  • AP

The U.S. Coast Guard is backing away from a weekend report that a ship may have struck something in Lake Superior before it began taking on water. Authorities now say the ship likely had a stress fracture in its hull. The ship is called the Michipicoten. It was carrying iron ore and had 22 people aboard Saturday. Half of the crew was evacuated for safety reasons while the ship was able to reach a port in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Lt. Joe Snyder of the Coast Guard says a ship striking something in open water in Lake Superior “would have been very peculiar.”

Takeaways from AP examination of flooding's effect along Mississippi River

  • By MICHAEL PHILLIS, JIM SALTER and CAMILLE FASSETT - Associated Press

Flooding has pushed people out of their homes near the Mississippi River at a roughly 30% higher rate than the U.S. as a whole, according to data provided exclusively to The Associated Press by the risk analysis firm First Street. That’s hurting a region that is already growing slower than the rest of the country and in some places is struggling with job loss and fewer resources. The riverside community of West Alton, Missouri, is an example of one that has repeatedly been hit by floods. That’s forced some people to leave and cut into the sense of community. Climate change is making bad floods more frequent by sending more water into the atmosphere and causing more extreme rainfalls.

Poland will have to play at least its opening game at the European Championship against the Netherlands on Sunday without injured star striker Robert Lewandowski. Poland’s team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski says the Barcelona star has a torn biceps femoris muscle in his right leg from a warmup against Turkey in Warsaw on Monday that Poland won 2-1. He says “We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria.” In Group D, Poland faces Austria on June 21 at the tournament in Germany before playing France four days later.

What the new "buy now, pay later," rule means for small businesses offering the service

  • By MAE ANDERSON - AP Business Writer

“Buy now, pay later” services are a popular way that shoppers pay for goods. Because shoppers like the service, offering it can be a plus for a small business. But since the payment plan is offered by third-party companies — such as Affirm and Klarna — there can be risks involved too. If something goes wrong, consumers could blame the small business — even if they have nothing to do with the payment plan. But the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a new rule that may ease small business owners' minds.

Caitlin Clark and other rookies draw near-record crowds, record ratings for 1st month of WNBA season

  • AP

The WNBA says the first month of the season drew its highest attendance since the league’s second season in 1998 and the best television ratings in the league's history. The figures are the latest evidence of the surging popularity of the WNBA since it added prominent rookies including Indiana’s Caitlin Clark, Chicago’s Angel Reese and Los Angeles’ Cameron Brink. The league says its games are averaging 1.32 million viewers, nearly tripling last season's average. The WNBA says it sold out more than half its games in May, with arenas filled to 94% capacity.

Iceland issues license for 128 fin whales to be hunted this year

  • By SYLVIA HUI - Associated Press

Iceland’s government says it has issued a license to the North Atlantic nation’s last fin whaling company to hunt and kill 128 fin whales this year. Animal rights groups say that while the number allowed is significantly lower than in previous years, the decision to allow the practice to continue is inhumane and disappointing. Iceland’s government said in a statement Tuesday that commercial whaling company Hvalur hf. was given a license permitting the hunting of 128 fin whales in Icelandic waters and parts of Greenland and the Faroe Islands for the 2024 hunting season. That is typically from June to August.

TNT Sports reaches 10-year deal to carry the French Open beginning next year

  • By JOE REEDY - AP Sports Writer

Warner Bros. Discovery and the French Tennis Federation made official on Tuesday what had been revealed over the weekend — the French Open will air on TNT Sports in the United States beginning next year. TV sportscaster Noah Eagle announced at the end of NBC’s coverage on Sunday that TNT Sports would be the new home of the tournament. The 10-year agreement will average $65 million per year, a sizable jump from the $12 million a year the French Tennis Federation had received from NBC and Tennis Channel for the U.S. rights. NBC first aired the second leg of tennis’ Grand Slam in 1975, and had been doing it uninterrupted since 1983.

Union: 4 Florida police officers indicted for 2019 shootout that left UPS driver and passerby dead

  • By TERRY SPENCER - Associated Press

A Florida police union says four of its officers have been indicted for a 2019 shootout on a busy street that left a UPS driver, the two robbers who hijacked him and a nearby driver dead. The South Florida Police Benevolent Association criticized the Broward County State Attorney’s Office on Tuesday for seeking the grand jury indictment. It didn't say what the Miami-Dade County officers have been charged with. They are expected to turn themselves in next week. Charging Florida law enforcement officers for an on-duty killing is highly unusual. Prosecutors declined comment. The Miami-Dade Police Department said it would issue a statement later Tuesday.

Music Review: Paul McCartney and Wings' oft bootlegged 1974 'One Hand Clapping' deserves applause

  • By SCOTT BAUER - Associated Press

The sound of Paul McCartney and Wings' “One Hand Clapping” used to only be heard on bootlegs, or in snippets available on archive releases over the years. The AP’s Scott Bauer says the official release deserves two-handed applause. The record finds McCartney and the 1974 iteration of his band Wings in peak form as they set up shop in the familiar confines of Abbey Road Studios in London. The recordings were made while “Band on the Run” was enjoying a seven-week run at the top of the British album charts. The only real miss with this release was not including the video. “One Hand Clapping” is out Friday.

French opposition parties on the left and right seek alliances ahead of snap elections

  • by BARBARA SURK - Associated Press

French opposition parties on the left and the right are scrambling to form alliances for the upcoming snap elections called by President Emmanuel Macron after his party suffered a crushing defeat by the far right at the European vote on Sunday. Sharp differences remain in both political camps, but they appear to have one thing in common as they prepare for the two-round vote just three weeks away: They don’t want to cooperate with Macron. Left-wing parties said they were united behind a “new popular front” to form an “alternative to Emmanuel Macron," while Marine Le Pen and her National Rally are seeking to consolidate power on the right.

She gave no details of the assault Tuesday during her interview but said that it was “probably also an accumulation of many other things." A 39-year-old Polish man was arrested and is held in pre-trial custody until June 20 on preliminary charges of violence against a person in public service. The motive for the assault is unclear.

Pakistani army kills 11 militants in raid in the northwest following bombing that killed 7 soldiers

Pakistan's authorities say security forces have killed 11 militants in an overnight operation in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in the restive northwest. In a statement Tuesday, the military said the raid was in retaliation to Sunday’s roadside bombing that killed seven soldiers in the same Lakki Marwat district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bordering Afghanistan. It added the operation is still ongoing “to eliminate any other terrorist found in the area”. No one has claimed Sunday’s attack, however, blame is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban which has stepped up its assaults in the region since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021.

The Latest: Jury to resume deliberations in Hunter Biden's federal gun trial

  • By The Associated Press

Jurors will resume deliberations in the criminal case against Hunter Biden over a gun he bought in 2018 when prosecutors say he was in the throes of a crack cocaine addiction. Jurors deliberated for less than an hour Monday afternoon before leaving the federal courthouse in Delaware. They’re weighing whether President Joe Biden’s son is guilty of three felonies. Prosecutors spent last week using testimony from his ex-wife and former girlfriends, photos of him with drug paraphernalia and other tawdry evidence to make the case that he lied when he checked “no” on the form at the gun shop that asked whether he was “an unlawful user of, or addicted to” drugs.
